Description
Sewing Basics Summer CAMP – 1 week – 4 hours a day
This year will be the first Kids Sewing 101 Summer camp!!! This is a fantastic deal, if this was taken as private lessons, it would cost around $500 plus the cost of supplies!
Sewing basics are the best place to start for the new sewist! The best thing about this camp is we will be working on necessary sewing skills and building up techniques over the week.
Day 1 – Sewing Machine Basics, learn all about using the sewing machine from bobbin filling, threading, cleaning, needles and more! Then we will practice our stitches on sewing sheets getting us prepped to make a square pincushion! After students make a pincushion, students will be encouraged to dig into the donated fabric to practice sewing on the machine.
Day 2 – Applique Felt Pillows 12×12
Each student will design a pillow; they will choose felt pieces to construct their design on the pillow front, then learning about applique they will sew on their design. Students will learn the proper order to construct a decorative pillow. They will learn about design, applique and basic pillow construction. If there is extra time after the pillow, we will sew together a fabric envelope with velcro closure using donated fabrics!
Day 3 – Students will start out the day making themselves a french seam pillowcase! Learning about pivoting and turning, french seams, and the burrito roll. The second project we will create will be an unlined zipper case for their pencils and art supplies! If there is time left over students will learn some basic embroidery stitches to prepare them for the next day’s project.
Day 4– Students will make stuffed animal faced pillows. Students will learn about hand-stitching as we embroider the faces onto the pillow. Also, students will learn fun tricks to add floppy ears or tongues to their pillows. They will get to choose from a cat, dog or rabbit! After the pillows are made students will learn how to sew a button and how to sew a basic hem (alterations – great life skill!)
Day 5 – Tote bag – Quilting 101 – this class will be the final class of the camp. We will use charm packs to design a basic quilt pattern. Students will learn about sewing a scant (1/4 inch seam) and how to properly piece together their quilt top for the tote front and back. Then they will learn how to put together a lined library tote bag with inside pockets.
