Learn to Sew
4-week workshop – Learn the basic techniques that will help inspire creations to come! Each week we will learn a new technique or skill to help build confidence. Projects will be straight stitch projects to help master the basics of keeping a straight line, seam allowance, and clean stitching.
What will be made?!
Week One – Sewing Machine Basics – Sept 12th, 10-12:15
Learn all about using the sewing machine from bobbin filling, threading, necessary cleaning, changing a needle, about needles and more! Then we will practice our stitches on sewing sheets getting us prepped to make a square pincushion! After students make a pincushion, fabric and polyfill are provided to complete the project.
Week 2 – Pillows Applique Felt Pillows 10×10 – Sept 19th, 10-12:15
Each student creates a pillow with their first initial. Using felt and they will choose pieces to construct their design on the pillow front, then learning about applique they will sew on their design. Students will learn the proper order to build a decorative pillow. They will learn about design, applique and basic pillow construction.
Week 3 – French Seam Pillowcases! – Sept 26th, 10-12:15
Then we will tackle French seams! A fantastic finishing that makes a project go from homemade to handmade! Students will learn about pivoting and turning, french seams, and the burrito roll.
Week 4 – Tote bag – Oct. 3rd, 10-12:15
In the final class of the workshop, students will learn how to construct a lined library tote bag with inside pockets.

3/4 Yard Cotton Print (multi-directional prints work best – Pillowcase Project)
1/2 Yard Solid Cotton (Tote Bag Main Fabric)
1/2 Yard Solid Cotton (Tote Bag lining)
16 oz bag of Polyfill for pillow and pincushion
2 – Fat quarters for applique pillow(solid colors are best or very small print)
